Dark purple Siberian melic "Red Spire" - Melica altissima var. atropurpurea.
Perennial of the Poaceae family.
Native to the steppes from Southern Europe and Western Asia to the Yenisei River.
Features: Purple-brown inflorescences resembling pipe cleaners.
Large plants with creeping rhizomes. Stems are erect and rough. Leaves are 0.4-1.2 cm wide and flat.
Panicles are 10-20 cm long, very dense and more or less one-sided, with very short branchlets.
Flowering period: May - July.
Height of flowering plant: 100 cm.
Growth pattern: erect/bushy.
Plant spacing: 100 cm
Soil requirements: dry, moderately fertile. Propagates well by seed.
Hardiness zones: Z4 - Z8.
Uses: Suitable for cutting.
In landscape design, they look especially attractive when combined with their rich green leaves and as a backdrop for yellow and orange flowers, or planted alone in the lawn.
