Native to the steppes from Southern Europe and Western Asia to the Yenisei River.
Features: Purple-brown inflorescences resembling pipe cleaners.
Large plants with creeping rhizomes. Stems are erect and rough. Leaves are 0.4-1.2 cm wide and flat.
Panicles are 10-20 cm long, very dense and more or less one-sided, with very short branchlets.
Flowering period: May - July.

Growth pattern: erect/bushy.

Soil requirements: dry, moderately fertile. Propagates well by seed.
